Why Support Warrior Dog Foundation and Mission K9?

Military Working Dogs (MWDs) need our help because, despite their years of dedicated service, they often face significant challenges after retirement. Here are some key reasons why Warrior Dog Foundation and Mission K9 step in to support them:

1. Lack of Government Support After Retirement:  Unlike human veterans, MWDs do not receive government-funded retirement care. Once they are no longer fit for duty, they are typically re-homed, left in the care of their handlers who may lack the financial resources or facilities to support them properly, or face euthanasia.

2. Difficulty in Adoption:  Many retired MWDs have specialized training, high-energy temperaments, and physical and mental injuries, making them challenging to place in regular homes. They require experienced handlers who understand their unique needs.

3. Medical Needs and Rehabilitation:  These dogs often retire with injuries, PTSD, or other health issues due to years of intense physical work. Their medical care can be costly, requiring specialized treatment, surgeries, or long-term medication.

4. Emotional and Behavioral Challenges:  After years in combat or high-stress environments, MWDs may struggle with anxiety, aggression, or trust issues. Transitioning to civilian life can be difficult without proper rehabilitation.

5. Ensuring They Stay with Their Handlers:  The Warrior Dog Foundation and Mission K9 work to reunite MWDs with their former handlers by providing resources such as kennel structures, financial aid, and logistics support.

6. Honoring Their Service:  MWDs have saved countless lives through bomb detection, search-and-rescue missions, and combat support. Supporting them in retirement is a way to recognize their sacrifice and ensure they live out their remaining years in comfort.

By advocating for and supporting retired military working dogs, we help give these heroes the dignity and care they deserve after their years of service.
